CariFin e-news interviews Maria Rivas-Mc Millan – Group VP, Corporate Communications at Guardian Holdings Limited.

Team Guardian is again doing well in this year’s CariFin Games and she is an ardent fan of CariFin.  It is always a pleasure hearing from her around this time as we try to find out her thoughts on CariFin and health and fitness issues in the industry.

CariFin E-NEWS: How are you today Maria?

Maria Rivas-Mc Millan:
Great!

CEN: We last spoke around this time in 2009.  How do you like how your team is doing in CariFin 2010?

M-RM:
I’m always proud of all the members of Team Guardian.  Win, lose or draw, the real success is in the strength of mind, body and spirit that is the inevitable result of a commitment of this nature.  Overall, Team Guardian has given an excellent account.

CEN: Your star athlete won one of the 3 running events so she goes in with the best chance among the women to win the cross country event.

M-RM:
Absolutely! We stand a good chance at winning the Cross Country since Crystal showed strength and endurance in the Chancellor event and the Cross Country is not much different.

CEN: We are seeing a level of consistency in your team members that makes me wonder, there could be a level of dominance if they continue and stay together.

M-RM:
Having a common goal and dedicated, encouraging coaches like Jade Camps and Alfred Patrick continue to play a huge role in their progress to date.

CEN: What kind of standing does CariFin Games have in your institution among events you take part in? I am seeing a bigger role every year?

M-RM:
CariFin Games are a major event in our Employee Calendar – you’ve seen how our team participation has grown and, with it, our role as a corporate sponsor.

CEN: On a more serious note, how has Guardian coped with obesity and inactivity, and the resultant absenteeism caused by these factors?

M-RM:
I should mention that Guardian introduced a Wellness Programme more than a decade ago.   Called ‘Life Pulse’, it is managed by an employee committee with the support of Group Human Resources.   Life Pulse’s mantra is ‘healthy bodies, healthy minds, healthy lives’.
So both the company and employees are very cognizant of the effect lifestyle choices can have on quality of life.  That doesn’t mean we do what we’re supposed to do all the time – it’s a battle on an individual and company basis.
The most important thing is to continue to drive home appropriate messages and to offer opportunities to employees to engage in an active lifestyle.

Calling it!

Calling it!

I have been viewing the times of the top ten runners in the female category to try and call it (the cross country results) and the figures just paint an interesting picture. Putting it mildly it is very difficult to call and could be anyone’s guess.

With a picture in my mind of the Sevilla golf course with it’s undulating outline, I am playing back these stats in my mind to forecast at the end what I will come up with.

This year’s CariFin Urban Challenge was very competitive as the top ten women had less space in between them. Gone are the days when the female winner would solo it away from the pack and say at the end, “It was easy.”

This year the winners all had to watch their backs. It is plain to see, as the results show, that each of the 3 running races of the Urban Challenge had different winners.

But more importantly, I want to show how tightly compact was the top 10 group. In the One lap

savannah, the top 10 runners crossed the finish line in a total 1 minute and 18 seconds between them. Salisha Julien was 12 seconds behind Esla Anthony the winner of the One Lap Savannah and Crystal Ann Awai following 10 seconds later.

And to make matters worse to call this in or predict a clear favorite coming into Sevilla, Mumtaz Amarali, coming from 4th spot in the One Lap Savannah, takes on the inside of the Sand Track of the Queen’s Park Savannah or the Green Mile, like she wrote the book – “How to run the Sand Track like a pro”, handling the bends and the strong head winds better than the other competitors and left the other two top 3 finishers of the One Lap Savannah in the dust. Also, the difference between the top 10 female was only 1 minute to cross the finish line between them.

Mumtaz Amarali of GHL Won the Green Mile

And the difficulty to call this doesn’t get any easier, with Crystal Ann Awai, last year’s cross country winner, finding form and confidence on the hill outdistancing the competition as though someone had told her in her dreams the night before that the hills are yours.

Of the top 4 runners, Salisha Julien of RBTT Bank was the most consistent varying between 2nd or 3rd places. If she could hold it together and train with Sevilla terrain in mind, she could be a very formidable threat to the 2 lap female Cross Country title.
Esla Anthony move from 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 3 races looks suspect on the hill as she finished 23 seconds behind Awai who won the race. She should be a considerable factor in the outcome of the results on June 06, at the Sevilla course.

There are other good, strong competitors who took part in this series and could provide

Salisha Julien placing 2nd on Chancellor Hill

some good competition and make for an interesting race and possibly an upset.
Candace Rollock came 4th, 5th and 4th in the series giving a good account of herself as an improved participant she placed 4th at Sevilla last year we could see if she could improve that position. Angel Berkely finished in 5th, 4th and 6th places in the series and it show that she was not idle for 2009 but has some training under her belt and should feature in the top 10 for CariFin
